Winter
Chapter 11
âThat has got to be one of the most unpleasant experiences in my entire life,â Ebon said.
It was midsummer, and the morning, though still young, was already very hot. The heat soaked into NÃcÃâs aching body and turned her thoughts to sluggish mush. âWhat is?â she muttered, not bothering to open her eyes and look at the werewolf.
âGetting shot and then suffocating to death.â The significance of what he just said was enough to make NÃcà sit up and look at him. He nodded to her, a hint of triumph in his eyes. âI remember, NÃcÃ.â
Finally, they were making some headway.
NÃcà had begun Ebonâs training with a lot of ideas on how she could teach the werewolf control, mostly based on what Quizzit had said about belief and how a werewolfâs belief could affect how they looked and behaved. If Ebon believed turning into a wolf made him a monster, then that was what he was going to become. NÃcà thought that, if he could come to view his other half as something that was useful and right, like she and every other Kitsün considered his transformation, and not something he should fear or hate about himself, he would begin to accept that part of himself and gain a measure of control.
Her theory had been difficult for Ebon to embrace, and not entirely because he thought of himself as a monster while in his other form. His lack of enthusiasm also stemmed from the idea that facets of his alter ego might manifest while he was on two legs and supposedly normal. He didnât like to intentionally call up his wolfish aspects, and instead always fought to suppress them. NÃcà had stressed this was not the way. She insisted that he should be trying to call up those parts of himself when the moon was at an ebb to better understand them and to use them to his advantage.
He agreed reluctantly to start practicing what NÃcà was trying to teach him, and gradually, he learned to call up certain aspects at will while still in Human form. One of the first objectives he attempted to achieve was to shift his vision so that he could see better in the dark because much of clan life and travel happened at night. It was a minor cause for celebration when, one night, Ebon successfully changed his vision so they could continue traveling and make up some trail time. Heâd also been successful shifting his other senses over into a wolfâs more acute sensitivity, though working with his sense of smell had made him very uncomfortable. He said going around trying to learn everyoneâs scent made him feel silly, but eventually, he grew accustomed to that as well.
NÃcà had also suggested that he invoke the change willingly on the full moon rather than fight it until he no longer had a choice in the matter. She thought that one of the main reasons he was so berserk after he shifted was
